At Candle 79, NYC

Orally fixated vegetarians can easily find satisfaction in NYC

A guide to the best vegan and vegetarian restaurants in New York City, with personal recommendations for each.

The obesity epidemic has passed over NYC. I hardly saw a fat arse in Manhattan, except the occassional big black woman on the subway. Maybe it is because the locals dont own cars and it is easy to walk everywhere, or maybe it is because the food is soooo good? We ate out a lot, but despite (or perhaps because of) that I came home 2 inches smaller in the waist (that is an inch per week!!) and no longer addicted to coffee. Americans do NOT do coffee well… in fact, it is generally so bad, it is better to drink tea.

Here are the highlights of the places to eat:

Blossom – http://www.blossomnyc.com/site/

This is my fave of a list of favourites. We went twice to the Columbus Ave site, but there are 2 others in NYC. Every mouthful was perfect. If only the vegans ruled the earth!

Candle 79 – http://www.candle79.com/

More vegan delights, this place is pretty fancy… but it has both style and substance. This is close enough to the museums of the upper east side to bookend a visit.

Candle Cafe – http://www.candlecafe.com/

Great for lunch if you can get a table. More organic vegan food… perfect for the animal loving upper east siders. The food is lovely, the environment not as nice as Candle 79 or Blossom.

Vice Versa – http://www.viceversarestaurant.com/index2.htm

This is the place we went for my birthday. It is not vegan, but there are plenty of healthy Italian choices. Close to Broadway, this is a good place to go before/after a show.

Josie’s- http://www.josiesnyc.com/josie_west/josie_west.html

Just lovely… read my earlier entry on this place… and remember to leave room for dessert.

Quintessence – http://www.raw-q.com/

This tiny little place in the East Village does gourmet style raw organic vegan food. The green soup is hard core, but everything else is worth a try. Ravioli made from turnip skins is superb.

Henry’s – http://www.henrysnyc.com/

Promoted as “Modern American bistro”, this place wont disappoint the better Australian palette, even the coffee is drinkable (a rarity in USA).

Also, if you need something quick and fabulous, visit a Wholefoods Market store. We went to the big one at Columbus Circle a couple of times, and also to one on the upper west side near 96th street.
