Banning public advertising can make a place look affluent
Maine is the second poorest state in the USA but looks affluent — possibly because billboards are banned statewide.
I was surprised to learn that Maine is the second poorest state in the USA. The poorest is Mississippi. Yet Maine doesn’t look or feel poor.
Maine is really, really beautiful – even at the beginning of spring. Natural beauty… and quaint houses… and friendly, softly spoken people. And no evidence of an obesity epidemic. People drive, so walking is not the explanation for the lithe physiques.
Maybe it is the prohibition on billboards? That’s right, no billboard advertising in the entire state of Maine! I love this. Imagine not knowing about “longer lasting sex” or how many miles it is to the next Maccas. Imagine uninterrupted views along the highway rather than 10 foot high images of Pepsi Max.
I was fortunate to have 2 days in Maine reconnecting with my dear friends Leslie Joy and Miles and their daughters. This was a very loving and rich experience and one of the highlights of my time in USA.
