Nun Fun in Assisi
Staying in a Franciscan convent, dancing with a groovy nun, and the remarkable Nun Spa built over Roman ruins with a thermal spring. (3 min read)
Our accommodation in Assisi is in a convent. Although it pre-dates St Francis, it is the home of some lovely Franciscan missionary nuns dedicated to the Baby Jesus.
This is the perfect place for us to stay. It is very, very clean — physically and energetically — with its own chapel and close to the Basilica of St Francis. My room has an awesome view down the hill, showcasing both sunrise and sunset. I took many photos from my room. My travel companions also captured some good orb shots from their rooms.
There was a bit of a nun theme for our time in Assisi. While the longstanding ambition to have a nun wash my clothes was not realised, I did get to sleep in a nun’s bed (alone, of course) and to dance with a groovy one in the foyer of our convent.
There are lots of nuns in Assisi — brown ones, white ones, black ones and blue ones. It is difficult to say which group is my favourite. I quite like the friendly young Asian nuns, but the old dears in our convent were also very nice. I spotted nuns having fun all over town. Unfortunately, I missed the chance to photograph a beautiful Black nun in a white habit hugging a faux giraffe on the main street.
For the rest of my life, I will remember my visit to the Nun Spa in Assisi. It is a remarkable place of relaxation and care.
Built around Roman ruins in a deconsecrated convent, the Nun Spa takes advantage of a thermal spring in the area. It has saunas and spa baths, and even the showers have perfumed water.
I had the whole Nun Spa to myself and enjoyed a wonderful massage from a kind Italian woman — she had lovely long curly hair, so I’m sorry to say she was no nun. It was a delightful way to unwind after exploring Assisi.
